Ink & Shades of Black and White
In this project, we merged two houses along a riverbank. The design was inspired by a painting of the Qing Dynasty painter Zheng Banqiao. The painting is a minimalistic one with a few bamboo trees and leaves on the branches in contrasting shades of dark black ink versus light shades on a pure white background.

Using natural materials indoors, such as bamboo, wood, stone, iron pieces, and decoratic paints , the interior is designed to blend in with the natural surroundings outside the window. Like the black ink brush of Zheng Banqiao, with contrasting strokes of strong and light brushwork, the design is built on a classic, simple black versus white aesthetic, where private space easily can become public space, and screen doors harken back to classical China’s simplicity and elegance.
The dining room leads into the living room, which is both a dining space and a place to host guests. The rear display cabinet captures the concept of a screen door, and the three-screen door is fully unfolded. It is a 2.4 meters hollow wall which can play the role of a door, to give privacy to the sleeping quarters on the left. The opening and closing of the screen door, one deep and one shallow, one full of movement and one quiet, effortlessly changes the space from public to private. At the same time, it blends well with the large, slate wall and the peaceful nature outside the window.

In this design, the riverbank is the only background of the house, light and shadow are the only changes in this simple environment. The window blinds, curtains, iron plates and black slate wall are constants while the changing light trajectory throughout the days and seasons is the only change. This elegant, minimalistic black and white design infuses the merged house with the simplicity of a bygone era and serenity.
